COURSE:
Environmental Disinfection Specialist

Introduction   Many people, even cleaning professionals, mistakenly think they are killing germs simply because they are spraying a disinfectant.  The process of truely "disinfecting" is much more complex, and the environmental variables that effect disinfection are much more involved than even most professionals realize.  This course is absolutely essential for those persons who may be asked to clean-up and disinfect areas of disease concern, human/animal/rodent/bird waste, foodborne outbreaks, pandemics, or other public health hazards. As an advanced course, it explores deeper into the science of disinfection, decontamination and ways to measure and document the effectiveness of your work in order to create a truely healthy environment.

Course Description
This three-day course starts with the basics of disease, and methodically takes you through new methods of cleaning and disabling bacteria and viruses in various venues.  New disinfectants and devices are prominently used in this course and the student will learn the latest methods to deal with ships, aircraft, businesses, schools, daycare centers, hospitals, long-term healthcare facilities, agricultural outbreaks, bio-terrorism response, veterinary, and other environmental health challenges.

The course includes:

An intensive look at the increasing number of emerging diseases and the frightening aspects of microbial mutations that are creating "super-bugs" in our environment.

  • Selecting and using appropriate PPE, including PAPR, and Level C attire.
  • The concepts of safety zones, containment, personal decon and safety.
  • Understanding the various types of pathogenic microbes, their specific hazards, how they survive, and where they are commonly found.
  • Safely cleaning a variety of soils and microbial contamination.  This includes understanding vector-carried diseases, zoonotic diseases, transmission methods, containment, cleanup and disposal.
  • The latest technology to actually measure effective decontamination of surfaces and allow supervisors to check the work of subordinates or to prove effectiveness to clients.
  • In-depth understanding of specific cleaning techniques, new cleaning technology, and the latest knowledge in disinfection chemistry.

The course includes classroom as well as hands-on use of all equipment and chemicals. A certificate is awarded to graduates, and Continuing Education Units (or CEU's) may apply from some associations and organizations.
